This lesson illustrates how Peter’s great confession in Mt. 16 and the transfiguration in the following chapter correspond to the apostles’ baptism of the Holy Spirit and beginning of the church in Acts 2. Where Jesus had previously told the disciples to keep His identity as Messiah a secret, once they had the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues, they were finally free to share this wonderful news with everyone, complete with the miraculous ability to communicate it to all regardless of any language barrier. Peter concludes in Acts 2 with “save yourselves,” indicating the need for a believer to take action.
