In Matthew 9, Jesus describes himself as the Great Physician and then proceeds to miraculously heal a woman without touching her and raise a child from the dead. In the context of why Jesus spent time with tax collectors and sinners, He compared the sinners to the sick in need of a physician. If Jesus can heal the sick and raise the dead, surely He also can heal those who are spiritually sick. We all need the Great Physician. The woman who was healed and the child’s family both heard of the miracles Jesus had performed, believed He could help them, and acted upon their faith. Christians today do the same–we hear the gospel, believe it, and obey it in repentance and baptism, acting upon our faith.
